Entering opens

Seven things to check before you enter an open

CRESIO Golf · 7 November 2026

Entry forms are short, but the conditions behind them are not. These are the details worth reading before you pay an entry fee.

1. The handicap limit, and when it is checked

Many opens set a maximum handicap index. Check whether it applies on the day entries close or on the day of the event, and what happens if your index rises above it in between.

2. Age rules

Junior, senior and mid-amateur events set their age limits differently. Some use your age on a fixed date, such as 1 January, others your age on the first day of the event. Read the exact wording before you assume you qualify.

3. How the field is chosen

Fields are filled by lowest handicap, by ballot, or in the order entries arrive. If it is first come first served, know exactly when entries open.

4. The closing date

Closing dates are often weeks before the event, and popular opens can fill before them. Put the date in your diary as soon as you decide to play.

5. Format and number of rounds

Check whether it is 18 or 36 holes, stroke play or Stableford, and whether there is a cut. A 36-hole day changes your travel plans and how you prepare.

6. Withdrawals and refunds

Read the withdrawal policy. Some events refund entry fees up to a set date, some keep a reserve list and refund if your place is filled, and some do not refund at all.

7. What you need on the day

Check the dress code, whether caddies or buggies are allowed, practice round arrangements and the start sheet date. Then book somewhere to stay close enough to arrive rested.
